About the Image Metadata Viewer
Every image file carries more than just pixels. Alongside the picture itself, a file can store technical details about how it was created, what size it is and, in the case of photographs, which camera and settings were used. The Image Metadata Viewer reads that information directly in your browser so you can inspect it without installing software or uploading anything.
What is image metadata?
Image metadata is the descriptive and technical information stored inside an image file. It typically includes details such as the file type, file size, width and height, colour information and the date the file was last modified. Some formats store considerably more than others.
What is EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata commonly written into digital photographs by cameras and smartphones. It can include the camera make and model, lens, capture date, exposure time, aperture, ISO, focal length, flash status, editing software and sometimes GPS coordinates showing where the photo was taken.
Does this tool upload my image?
No. The image is read locally using standard browser APIs. Nothing is sent to a server, no external image-processing API is used, and the file is discarded as soon as you clear the tool or close the page.
What information can I see?
- File information such as name, type, MIME type, size, dimensions and last modified date.
- Image information such as width, height, aspect ratio, orientation, format and colour depth where the format exposes it.
- EXIF metadata such as camera, lens, exposure settings and capture date, when the image contains it.
- A clear warning when embedded GPS coordinates are detected.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is image metadata?
It is the information stored inside an image file describing the file itself, such as its format, dimensions, colour details and creation date.
What is EXIF data?
EXIF is a specific metadata standard used mainly by cameras and phones to record how a photo was captured, including settings, timestamps and sometimes location.
Can image metadata contain my location?
Yes. Many phones record GPS coordinates in a photo's EXIF data. If coordinates are present, this tool highlights them so you can decide whether to remove them before sharing the image.
Does this tool upload my image?
No. All reading happens in your browser on your own device.
Why can't I see EXIF data?
EXIF is usually only present in photographs. Screenshots, graphics, edited exports and images shared through social platforms often have their metadata stripped, and formats such as PNG or WebP rarely carry EXIF at all.
Does every image contain metadata?
No. Basic file details are always available, but richer metadata depends entirely on how the image was created and whether it was preserved afterwards.
